Sail Training - Frequently Asked Questions
I live in
South Africa and have no experience. Where do I
start?
The first course to start with would be the
Competent Crew
Course. This course teaches you the basic
skills you will need to be part of a crew aboard
a sailing vessel.
Who needs an RYA qualification?
The Royal Yachting Association qualification
is for people whop wish to sail in British
waters. There are different exams for the RYA
such as
Coastal
Skipper or
Yachtmaster. To learn more about RYA

When do I
do my exams?
The exams are done as part of the course
program. An RYA examiner will be on hand to test
you either in practical or in theory.
What will I need to do to validate my license
upon return to the UK ?
The RYA skipper’s course is valid in the UK, and
is validated by RYA instructors in South Africa
Where will I stay on the course?
Accommodation is included as part of the course
fee. Your time spent sleeping will be either on
the yacht, or in accommodation at Langebaan or
Hout Bay.
What should I bring with me?
You will need to bring a sleeping bag for
sleeping on the yacht, and if you have any wet
gear bring it along. Otherwise this can be
loaned for the month from the yachting academy
for £20 per month.
